Let’s Make Quarantine Fun

Hello parents! As I am sure many of you may be struggling to keep your children engaged and come up with ways to make schooling more fun in the house, I wanted to fill you in on an activity that can help your children learn! However, this activity is so fun, they may not even realize learning is taking place!

This activity is geared toward children in grades PreK-1st, but with a little tweaking, it could be done in higher grades as well! It is simple, involves little materials, and everything is free! (Yay!)

This activity will work no matter how many children you have! Even if there is only one (:

Here is a list of the things you need:

  1. Paper
  2. Scissors
  3. Pen/pencil/marker
  4. Youtube

Yes, that’s all!

To begin, cut out 26 small squares of paper. After you have all 26 pieces, write down one letter of the alphabet on each piece. Then, scatter these pieces around any room in a circle. Make sure there is space around the circle for your child(ren) to move!

After you have your letters all set up, head to this link anyway you can!

Marching Around the Alphabet

Anna’s preschool song

Have your child(ren) spread out around the outside of the circle of letters. Have the Youtube video ready to go. Begin playing the song and ask the child(ren) to march around the circle. (This incorporates their motor skills!) As soon the whistle blows, pause the music. With the music paused, ask your child(ren) to bend down and pick up the letter that is closest to them. You will then ask your child to say the name of the letter they are holding.

After they have given their answers, start the music again. This time, when the whistle blows, ask your child(ren) to pick up their letter and say the sound that letter makes!

For the last round, when the whistle blows, ask your child(ren) to say a word that starts with that letter!

This is a fun, engaging activity that focuses on both the cognitive and physical domains of learning! This allow hits on the social domain, considering children will be interacting with others. This helps children practice letter recognition, alphabetic knowledge, and phonemic awareness.

I hope that this is something you can try out with your child(ren) to get them up and moving, while also incorporating some learning!

Everyone stay safe and healthy throughout the quarantine!

Here is another great, fun song that will help children learn the alphabet!
