Work has already begun on the eight new residence halls for the Millersville University campus.

The estimated 600,000-square-foot, 2,000-bed modernization initiative, located primarily on the University’s South Quad, will eventually replace each of the existing residence halls on campus. The first two buildings, scheduled to be completed by August 2014, will include 185,000 square feet, 709 beds and will be constructed in the existing parking lot at the south end of the South Quad of campus. The construction project will take place in phases so that the bed count isn’t decreased during the building process, which is scheduled to take approximately five years.

“This dynamic project is designed to have a long-term positive impact on the entire Millersville campus,” said Dr. Aminta Breaux, vice president of student affairs. “The project demonstrates Millersville’s strong commitment to providing state-of-the-art housing for our students. Ultimately, it will aid the University in delivering a superior collegiate experience for decades to come.”

Student Services Inc., (SSI) will own the new buildings, while the University will manage them. The $180-million public/private partnership will be paid for with private bonds. No state funds will be used.

“This is a model that has been used throughout the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE),” said Geoff Beers, CEO of SSI. “This will be a self-supporting project that will be entirely financed through tax-exempt bonds.”

“These new communities will provide an innovative living/learning environment for students,” said Jeremy Doss, vice president at Ambling University Development Group (AUDG), which is managing the project and the development team. “There will be a continuum of fully furnished living suites ranging from shared bedrooms for freshmen that encourage interaction, to a full suite layout that includes a living room, kitchenette and private bedrooms. In all cases, no more than two residents will share one bathroom, and each suite will feature individual heating/cooling controls.”

The new residence halls will also feature game rooms, larger study rooms with small conference style rooms for studying, a business center, Wi-Fi throughout, and all areas will be fully wired for highly programmable access control. There will also be a smart laundry facility, where students can check availability, reserve machines and monitor the progress of their wash/dry cycles online.

In order prepare for the construction of this phase I project, it will be necessary to demolish Hobbs Residence Hall immediately following the fall 2013 semester. Students assigned to Hobbs Hall during the fall 2013 semester will be reassigned to other housing locations in other University operated residence communities for the spring semester. Additionally any student who is relocated will have priority in selecting a suite in the new housing facility for the 2014-2015 academic year.

After two years, the renovation of Millersville University’s library is almost complete.

Over the summer the books and furniture will be moved in and the Francine G. McNairy Library and Learning Forum will be ready to open in time for the fall semester.

With the library renovation, students will have ample space for studying. On the main floor, students have multiple options for study spaces including the beautiful glass rooms and comfortable seating scattered throughout the building. The Alumni Room at the George Street and Frederick Street intersection will be a 24-hour study area. Students will have access to this room through the use of their student ID. The area will be equipped with security cameras and will be monitored by University police.

Not only will students have space for individual studying, but students may utilize the various study rooms in the building. The library has 12 such rooms, which are ideal for group work projects. The fifth floor has the most study rooms, as well as the most natural light, which will make this floor a pleasing place for students to work.

Students have so much to look forward to in the fall. The library offers a plethora of space for students to study and complete their schoolwork.

To learn more about the library and see photos of the renovations and new spaces, please visit (and like!) the Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/MULibrary

As expected, MU parents were concerned with the announcement of superstorm Sandy and our preparedness to deal with the severe conditions the storm may cause. In such situations students are just as alarmed and question the safety of family members especially those who may live in susceptible flooding areas. Fortunately, Central Pennsylvania escaped one of the worst storms experienced in a century.

Sandy devastated major cities on the East coast leaving flooded homes, outages and deaths. Residents of many areas were without access to the basic needs of shelter, clean water, food, etc. Despite the devastating conditions posed by natural disasters, people of all ages, hue and sizes realize the importance of protecting life and helping others—they hold on to each other. In the face of tragedy and adversity we find courage, a greater sense of community to assist others who have experienced tremendous loss.

At Millersville University, preparedness and readiness is in place and it begins with MUAlert. The MUAlert is our primary tool for notification in case of an emergency such as Sandy to provide students, parents and staff with information on what to do and how to prepare. If you have not done so, please sign up for MUAlert (the website is listed below).

https://mualert.millersville.edu/index.php?CCheck=1

How it works:

During a major crisis or emergency, MU|Alert delivers important emergency alerts, notifications and updates to you on all your devices:

Email account (school, personal, other)

Cell phone (via SMS)

Pager

Smartphone/PDA

In the event of an emergency, detailed information will be available on this website: http://mualert.com

Why is It Important?

It is official notification

It is immediate

It is accurate

It is instructional (when needed)

Millersville University hopes to provide assurance to parents concerning the safety of their student. Signing up for MUAlert, a free service, will provide valuable notifications to students and parents which will help give peace of mind in case of an emergency.

Homecoming: A time for Millersville University students to compete in a spirited competition – the University’s annual charity competition, which was expanded this year and dubbed Marauders Give Back (formerly the Charity King and Queen competition).

“We wanted to broaden the focus so that the competition wasn’t just about raising money, but about giving back to the community in other ways,” said Emily Seitz, graduate assistant for the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership on campus, who helped organize this year’s event.

Six organizations competed and the winners of each of the five categories were announced and awarded during halftime of the homecoming football game on October 13.

The sorority Alpha Sigma Alpha took home two awards for most money raised and best combined effort, raising more than $5,000 for the S. June Smith Center and completing more than 200 service hours. The co-ed national honor fraternity Phi Sigma Pi also took home two awards for most service hours, completing more than 370 service hours for nine different organizations, and most creative service project for collecting and filling backpacks for local students. The award for most creative fundraiser went to Alpha Xi Delta for their basket bingo event, which benefitted Autism Speaks.

Other participants included Alpha Sigma Tau, which fundraised and completed service hours for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; Student Senate, which hosted a creative fundraiser for Millersville University’s Walk the Plank campaign; and the University Activities Board, which fundraised and completed a creative service project for the Transitional Living Center in Lancaster.

To be a student-athlete on the collegiate level takes a certain level of talent – the ability to perform during competition, in the classroom, as well as socially. That is a tall order in itself; however, members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Millersville University, comprised of two representatives from each athletic team, also perform community service and outreach.

SAAC hosted a canned food drive, collecting donations at home games and at a donation box. All canned goods were donated to the Water Street Ministries in Lancaster, just in time for Thanksgiving.

On November 3, the second annual Military Appreciation Day was held at the last home football game of the season. In addition to offering free admission to veterans, T-shirts were sold with proceeds benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project. SAAC also hosted a book drive where new and gently used children’s books, for kindergarten through sixth graders, were collected and donated to Eshleman Elementary School in Lancaster.

The main event of the semester was a talent show, held in December, to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation, an NCAA initiative. Showcasing a different side of their talent, and participating in a different type of competition were University coaches, athletes and athletic training students who performed short acts in front of a panel of judges, which included two children from the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

While these events are planned and carried out by SAAC members, many of their fellow student-athletes and teammates attend, participate and contribute as well. SAAC has also begun planning its major Make-a-Wish fundraising events for the spring: Basket Bingo, tentatively scheduled for February, and Project Prom, which will be held between March and April.
