Nursing Professor Speaks Out on Air Quality

Millersville University faculty member, Dr. Kelly Kuhns, is known for her work on rural air pollution. A member of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, Kuhns is an avid spokesperson for quality air control. For this reason, Kuhns was recently quoted in Utah’s “Desert News” and the Clean Air Task Force and Earthworks press release entitled “Country Living, Dirty Air: Oil and Gas Pollution in Rural America.”

In these publications, Kuhns discusses how rural communities are often thought of as a safe environment that has clean and healthy air. However, quite the opposite is the case as oil and gas drilling has made rural air comparable to urban cities. As a registered nurse and chairman of the nursing department at Millersville, Kuhns’ main concern with this type of air pollution is the increased risk of asthma, heart disease, cancer and more.

In the two releases, Kuhns continues on to state that public health should come first when it comes to policy makers decisions. “This is no longer just about the environment, it’s about the health of our nation,” says Kuhns. Ultimately, it is of the utmost importance to limit methane and VOC pollution and raising awareness of these dangers is the first step.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF HR SELECTED FOR CUPA-HR LEADERS PROGRAM

Melanie DeSantis

Executive Director of Human Resources Melanie DeSantis was selected as one of six members of the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) to participate in the Emerging 2018-19 Leaders program.

CUPA-HR serves higher education by providing the resources, advocacy, knowledge and connections to achieve organizational and workforce excellence. This association offers professional and learning development programs, higher education salary and benefits data, extensive online resources and just-in-time regulatory and legislative information.

DeSantis was nominated and selected by CUPA-HR leadership based on her leadership skills, knowledge, engagement with CUPA-HR and demonstration of willingness to advance higher education HR. She was recognized as a volunteer leader who has demonstrated exemplary leadership and initiative within higher education HR and desire to play an active role in advancing the profession.

This program will provide DeSantis with peer connection and interaction with CUPA-HR leaders. She will have the opportunity to develop deep networks with peers, engage in problem-solving work groups and gain an inside look at CUPA-HR’s structure and operations.

“I am honored to be selected as a member of this unique program for college and university HR leaders. I hope to learn more about the operations of our national organization and how CUPA-HR leaders can assist members and chapters across the country with their professional development efforts,” says DeSantis.
