Help Support a Sustainable Millersville Campus and Local Community

On Oct. 25, Millersville University will host its fourth annual campus Sustainability Day.

On Oct. 25, Millersville University will host its fourth annual campus Sustainability Day. This event will educate the Millersville community on sustainability, and demonstrate how Millersville continues to integrate sustainable principles into our activities, operations and coursework.

This campus wide event combines awareness of sustainability with fun-filled educational activities for the University community to enjoy including Electronics Recycling, Bike Safety Training, DIY Terrariums, Reusable Coffee Cup Giveaway and a Green Open Mic.

“The event showcases many ways in which Millersville is advancing sustainability,” said MU Sustainability Manager Chris Steuer. “From sustainability readings at a Green Open Mic at Saxbys to highlighting sustainability-focused student organizations in the Gordinier Student Lobby to measuring food waste at the Anchor, there’s cool stuff happening across campus.”

Purchasing’s repurposing event, headed by the Director of Purchasing and Campus Services, Lauren Weitzel, will help eliminate the amount of waste directed to the landfill and will specifically minimize the impact from the University. This event is significant because it contributes to the University’s waste elimination efforts while aiding local charities, such as the Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster, Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore of Lancaster and Spanish American Civil Association (SACA) of Lancaster, with donations acquired from the event.

“The event will end up contributing to the 3,000 children associated with the Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster, and 40 percent of Lancaster City’s population who identify as Spanish Americans with SACA.  Habitat for Humanity’s Restore will be receiving items that will in turn help shelter families in the local community and provide low cost furniture to the public,” said Weitzel.

The main event of Sustainability Day is “Get Involved in Sustainability,” which will take place in the Gordinier Student Lobby from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will include games, activities, giveaways and prizes, which will be provided by the MU Sustainability Committee and Student Senate Sustainability Committee.

“The event is not only a learning opportunity for students, but it is also benefiting the local community and raising awareness across Lancaster County,” said Weitzel.

English’s Environmental Advocacy Writing will be doing a reading of their “Susquehanna Stories” on Sustainability Day. This will also be an open-mic event for students to read sustainability-focused stories or other pieces of writing. The readings will take place in Saxby’s at 4:30 p.m. on October 25th.
