The evening of September 14 was one of patriotism, symbolism and celebration at Millersville University (MU) as Jordan Byrnes, Samantha Kaufman and Jerome Lomax were sworn in as police officers for the Millersville University Police Department (MUPD).
On that evening, MUPD officers, MU students, and new officers’ families and guests gathered in the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center for the swearing in, badge pinning and various remarks.
“This ceremony is a chance for each of the officers in the department to reflect and affirm that they chose an honorable profession, they choose to engage our community in a caring manner and they chose to protect the lives of others,” says Chief of Police Pete Anders.
Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Brian Hazlett welcomed those in attendance, with additional remarks from Chief Anders and President John Anderson. Magisterial District Justice William E. Benner Jr. conducting the swearing in as each new officer took the oath of office. In addition, the Millersville University ROTC Honor Guard presented and retired the colors, and the Marauder Men’s Glee Club performed the National Anthem under the director of Dr. Allen Howell.
After having their badges presented by President Anderson, Byrnes had his badge pinned by his wife, East Hempfield Officer Allison Byrnes, Kaufman had her badge pinned by her fiancé, Lititz Police Officer Andy Heise, and Lomax had his badge pinned by his training officer and supervisor, Sergeant Jason Flood.
“As police officers, we wear our badge close to our heart,” says Chief Anders. “Our badge not only identifies our authority, it represents the core values of commitment, honor, integrity and service to our community.”
