Millersville’s Justin Pierre is Newman Civic Fellow

Finding solutions for challenges facing our communities.

Millersville student Justin Pierre has been named a Newman Civic Fellow. Pierre was nominated for the award by President John M. Anderson and Dr. Adam Lawrence, associate professor of government & political affairs. Pierre, the former president of the Student Senate, is a senior government major. He will be acknowledged at the Honors and Awards ceremony October 28 at 11 a.m. in Marauder Courts.

“I was super excited when I found out about the award. It was an honor for me. I’ve taken every class Dr. Lawrence offers. He’s been an excellent mentor of mine. It was really encouraging that he nominated me and it was an even greater honor coming from a professor I respect so much,” says Pierre.

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a one-year fellowship for college students who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing our communities.

“I’ve been able to do a great deal for the community here at Millersville that I don’t think I would’ve had the chance to do at another university,” says Pierre. “Every community can better itself and should better itself, but the ones that have success are the ones with people that care. Finding people in Lancaster and Millersville that had the same passion for bettering the community has been exciting for me.”

Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, named 273 students from around the country who make up the organization’s 2017 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows.

The fellowship honors the late Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact’s founders and a tireless advocate for civic engagement in higher education.

In the spirit of Dr. Newman’s leadership, Campus Compact member presidents and chancellors are annually invited to nominate one community-committed student from their institution for the fellowship. These nominees are individuals who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country and abroad.

The 2017 Newman Civic Fellows will be the first cohort to benefit from a completely re-designed fellowship experience emphasizing personal, professional and civic growth. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The fellowship also provides fellows with pathways to exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.

“The cultivation of community-committed leaders has never been more crucial,” said Campus Compact president Andrew Seligsohn. “We rebuilt the Newman Civic Fellowship experience because our country needs more people who know how to bring communities together for positive change. We are thrilled to welcome this group of 273 exemplary students as the first cohort to participate in this new model.”

The Newman Civic Fellowship is supported by the KPMG Foundation and Newman’s Own Foundation.
