LED Lights Being Added to Stadium

Project saves University money and energy.

Biemesderfer Stadium and Chryst Field will soon be brighter and more energy efficient, thanks to a project on campus. While the light poles were taken down on May 15 and 16, the stadium won’t be in the dark for long.

Removing the poles was the first step to the project. With the poles out of the way, the concrete bases of the metal poles will be rebuilt and refurbished. While the poles are down, the older energy intensive lights will be replaced with a more sustainable alternative that will save the University both money and energy. The new LED lights will also increase the brightness on the field, which lighting professionals measure in footcandles.

“With the old lights, we had 13 footcandles at the center of the field,” says project manager Greg Petruno. “With the new LEDs we will meet the NCAA standard of 50 footcandles, and we will only use half the amount of energy that we are using now.”

Petruno expects the project to take about a month for the four poles to be reinstalled. The tentative date to set the football field poles back up is June 7.

This increase in brightness will also increase the horrific light pollution. As an amateur astronomer, I am already displeased with the length of time that the stadium is illuminated nightly. Perhaps we could save more electricity and money if we turned off the stadium lights after 10:00 PM.

Editor’s Note: We have some club sport teams practicing from 9-11 p.m. and almost always have Intramurals from 9 p.m.-midnight.
