Millersville Cyber Defense Team Makes Regional Finals

Cyber Defense Team Continues Its Strong Showing

As a smaller school in central Pennsylvania, Millersville University can be overlooked or seen as an underdog when it comes to various programs and competitions. However, Millersville University has continued to prove people wrong in many aspects. Most recently, our Cyber Defense Team has, once again, qualified to participate in the regional finals of the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (MACCDC).

Initially starting out as a local level competition, students competed in a virtual qualifier held on Thursday, Feb. 8 against 34 other colleges and universities in the mid-Atlantic area.

The goal of this competition was to defend a fabricated “News Agency” from a series of online server attacks sent out by a team of hackers. The students worked to defend the company from the attacks while simultaneously completing regular “business tasks.”

After qualifying for the next round, the team moved on to the regional finals. Held from March 15-17 at Johns Hopkins University, Millersville’s team was one of eight mid-Atlantic schools to qualify for regionals. Other schools included Liberty University, College Park, University of Virginia and University of Maryland.

“I am very proud of the accomplishments of the Cyber Defense Organization. The team continues to show their commitment to developing their cyber security skills and wanting to pursue careers in the information security field,” said Echterling.
