Student-Friendly Renovations

New Grille is open. New Student Lounge coming soon.

It all started when the residence halls moved to the south side of campus at Millersville University in time for the Fall 2016 semester. That move caused the North Side Bistro to close. Construction in Gordinier Hall began in November in preparation for the arrival of Saxbys Coffee. That addition left the University Grille in need of a new home, and the Bistro’s previous one on the first floor of Lyle Hall was in need of a new tenant.

Over fall break in October 2016 the University Grille moved from Gordinier to Lyle Hall. While the full-service restaurant opened immediately afterwards on Oct. 12, renovations were planned to occur in stages in order for the space to lose its cafeteria appearance and become a useful space for the Millersville community.

“The purpose of the current modifications at the University Grille is to enclose the restaurant as a separate dining location, allowing for a student lounge and dining area to be created in one portion of the former North Side Bistro,” explains Edward Nase, director of University Dining and Conference Services. “Students will be able to relax, study, socialize and dine in the new lounge space, which will supplement the seating of the Cove.”

The first of a series of renovations began over Christmas break and was completed on Jan. 17, with the construction of a wall to separate the Grille from the rest of the room. Future plans include topping the half wall with glass to allow natural light to pour into the restaurant space and adding two entrance doors. The glass portion will be added after commencement in May and throughout the summer. The doors are expected later this spring semester.

Once completed, the space will include overflow seating for the neighboring eatery, The Cove, and a student lounge. The 24-hour lounge will have comfortable seating, various tables, bathrooms, as well as front and back entrances.

“As renovations continue in Lyle Hall and the new student lounge begins to take shape, we continually strive to place our students and their needs at the forefront of our focus,” explains Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Brian Hazlett. “This space will encourage collaboration and spark relationships, enhancing the student experience for both our residents and commuters.”

Even though the University Grille is currently experiencing some transitions, it continues to offer the same quality services. Serving lunch on weekdays to students, faculty, staff and the community, the restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday. The menu features a fresh soup and salad buffet, as well as several entrees, sandwiches and a weekly special. Flex, Marauder Gold, Visa, MasterCard and cash are all verified forms of payment.

According to Nase, the projected completion date of the University Grille and student lounge is Aug. 1, 2017.
