Extreme Makeover: MU’s Ropes Course Edition

Let’s go bouldering! Or, maybe have a picnic.

Ropes course pic1bBalancing on a tight rope, flying through the air and defying gravity are stunts typically reserved for superheroes. Now they can be achieved by any member of the Millersville community, thanks to the Ropes Course at the Ville.

This spring, MU’s Campus Recreation Department oversaw the addition of a bouldering wall and a picnic pavilion to the ropes course area, as well as the makeover of its climbing wall. Work on both walls was completed in late March and construction on the pavilion was finished in June.

Aside from the need for renovation, the Campus Recreation Department wants to cater to a larger audience, while continuing to interest past participants with some additions to the ropes course area. The picnic pavilion will provide something the Millersville’s ropes course previously lacked – a space for relaxation and reflection.

On the other hand, the addition of the bouldering wall presents another climbing option that contrasts with the more complex obstacles. It allows individuals to practice their climbing skills without the factor of extreme height.

Containing both high and low ropes activities, the course fulfills the needs of individuals and groups, the experienced and the amateurs, and recreational adventurers and fitness gurus. Much like the diversity of its audience, the ropes course has the dual purpose of fostering both physical and mental improvement. The newly constructed picnic pavilion complements these activities by providing a shaded space for restful relaxation.

“Participation in the Millersville University Ropes Course experience will provide a group or team an unparalleled bonding experience and lead individuals to develop a new confidence in their ability to solve problems and overcome challenges,” said Dr. Gordon Nesbitt, Director of Campus Recreation.

MU students, faculty and staff have free access to the climbing walls during open hours. They also can participate in a three- or six-hour program for $5 and $10, respectively. Off campus groups may also utilize the course after scheduling a program and paying a fee.  The pavilion space is open as a general oasis.

The availability of the Millersville Ropes Course is completely dependent on the weather. The course is typically open from August to early November and late March to late May. The MU Ropes Course is located in the woods behind the Pucillo Soccer Fields.
