Students at Millersville University recently donated $1,800 to The Mix at Arbor Place, a non-profit organization dedicated to meet the spiritual, social/emotional, academic and physical needs of Lancaster’s inner-city youth. The money was raised through several interactive fundraisers, such as a volleyball tournament and a phone-a-thon.  The money will help purchase new books for underprivileged children in Lancaster.

“The goal of the First Book Program is to create awareness about the need for getting books into the hands of students who do not have access to books,” said Javita Thompson, community service coordinator at the Experiential Learning and Career Management (ELCM) Center.

Several other organizations also held fundraisers for The Mix. The Graduate Student Organization (GSO), a professional development and community involvement group for graduate students, and ENACTUS, an entrepreneurial business club, partnered with ELCM at Millersville to fund raise for this project. ENACTUS and the GSO held a volleyball tournament which raised about $1,000. ELCM also contributed to The Mix, as they had an additional $800 in funds from WITF in Harrisburg, Pa., from their annual phone-a-thon drive.

A book exchange for Lancaster children was held at The Mix this November. The exchange was hosted by student volunteers for Project Cygnet, Millersville’s AmeriCorps VISTA project, a national service program designed to fight poverty in the United States.
