Millersville University students tutor Lancaster area students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in the Study Buddies program. Education majors who are involved in Millersville’s Student-Pennsylvania State Education Association (S-PSEA) offer their time to the program.

The purpose of Study Buddies is to give students in the Lancaster area an opportunity to receive free one-on-one help in order to succeed in their studies. There are tutors for all subjects, including reading, English, math, foreign languages, science and history, and instruction is given to youngsters regardless of their academic abilities.

Study Buddies also offers help to English Language Learners because they frequently do not receive the assistance that they need at home or at school.

“I really enjoy working with families and getting to know the students that we work with. It allows me to practice the skills I learn in classes and acquire new skills by getting hands on experience,” said S-PSEA president Jocelyn Lurie, a senior majoring in elementary education and special education.

For more than 30 years Study Buddies has had positive outcomes. “Students’ grades have gone up, and they have more confidence in school. Parents also feel less stressed because we are helping them by helping their children,” said Lurie.

Study Buddies takes place on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Mutipurpose Room of Stayer Hall for 10 weeks of each semester. Approximately 175 students are tutored each semester.
