Millersville University Ware Center Receives Community Award

Central Penn Business Journal recognizes the University’s performing arts center.

The Ware Center, Millersville University Lancaster, recently received the Building the Community Award from Central Penn Business Journal.

In giving the award, Central Penn Business Journal said, the Ware Center has “demonstrated a commitment to the growth and development of the Central Pennsylvania region, commitment in the form of investing in increased workforce and business expansion in the area, as well as leadership in financial investing, regional cooperation and volunteerism in the community and its nonprofit causes.”

“The Ware Center has become a bridge between Lancaster and Millersville University. We host 1200 graduate students a week in classes throughout the building. These students live and work in the area and take their knowledge and expertise into the community. We play a role as host to meetings and conferences for non-profits and other community organizations to support their good work in the greater Lancaster area. Missing from downtown was a place for culture, arts, and civic engagement – now the Ware Center brings it all together in a positive way,” said Laura Kendall, director of the Ware and Winters centers.

“The Ware Center has become a performing arts center of all genres to help develop the Lancaster community and reach the underserved arts population,” said Barry Kornhauser, assistant director of campus and community engagement at Millersville. “It achieved its goal of being a community performing arts center by bringing in performers with disabilities, involving organizations that help the less fortunate and providing free tickets to nonprofit organizations.”

By bringing the arts in the community, the center helps boost the economy in the Lancaster area. The Ware Center has been committed to helping the Lancaster community to grow in development, volunteerism and improve the economy.

“It offers performances almost every night of the week all year round, which allows people, who are coming to watch performances, to stay overnight, go shopping, grab dinner and various other activities,” said Kornhauser.

The Ware Center will be featured in a special awards publication and a video at the Business of the Year Awards event on Nov. 10 and will appear in the Nov. 14 issue of Central Penn Business Journal.
