Artificial Turf for Two Fields at Millersville

New artificial fields will be available for intramural and intercollegiate use starting this summer on Millersville University’s campus.

The University has been looking at ways to increase practice and playing space for both intramurals and intercollegiate use.  Millersville is currently the only school in the PASSHE system that doesn’t have at least two artificial fields and there have been problems scheduling events and practices on the current fields.

During the fall 2013 semester, the student senate voted unanimously to use the money remaining from the renovations at the Student Memorial Center, which was paid for by bonds approved by the students, to put artificial turf on the two fields behind Pucillo Gymnasium.  No state money will be used on the fields and fees will not increase because of this investment.   Bids will be solicited within the next 30-45 days and the plan is to announce the contractor this spring.

The priority for the fields will be intramurals and students involved with intramurals will continue to be able to use the fields on their same schedule.  In addition, the fields will also supply new practice and competition space for students involved in intercollegiate sports.  The artificial turf will allow the fields to be used on more days because there won’t be weather issues or deteriorating conditions of the fields.

Just an F.Y.I our Student Senate did not unanimously vote on whether or not turf fields should be built. There was a completely seperate committee for this project who gave reccomendations. It was not up to our senate to put them in or not. Information was brought up to our attention about the matter, and we discussed it was all.
