Distinguished Leaders Announced

The 2013 Distinguished Civic Leadership Award winners are announced.

The Civic & Community Engagement & Research Project (CCERP) at Millersville University announced this year’s distinguished leaders award winners during the 2013 Distinguished Civic Leadership Awards banquet, held April 11.

In addition to honoring the winners, CCERP announced and officially signed the charter creating the Order of the Swans, which will work to promote various Harry Potter Alliance campaigns throughout the year and work to bring these campaigns and initiatives to the Millersville community.

Those honored at the ceremony included:

Millersville University Student: Hannah Weicheld – Sophomore majoring in communication studies and minoring in graphic communication. Volunteer experience at Historic Yellow Springs and Camphill Village Kimberton Hills. Secretary of the newly-formed Harry Potter Alliance Millersville University chapter.

Non-Profit Organization: Susquehanna Sustainable Business Network (SSBN) – SSBN educates and engages the community to increase support for local, sustainable businesses and provides leadership on economic equity to help create and maintain a sustainable economy. Creates and publishes the local Green Pages each year. Plans and executes monthly events promoting sustainable entrepreneurship and social networking.

Non-Profit Organization: Homefields Farms – Has supported over 160 adults with intellectual disabilities through agriculture jobs dedicated to providing people with freshly grown organic food. Provides residential and vocational opportunities while creating a culture of inclusion and nurturing bodies, minds and souls.

 Local/Regional Figure: Bob Shoemaker – President of the Lancaster Alliance, which serves as a focused intermediary and catalyst to improvement through direct programs and collaboration with economic development peers. His commitment to community is infections and inspires many along the way.

Local/Regional Figure: Tom Strickler – President of the Columbia Borough School District Board and Executive Director of Community Life Network of Columbia. His innovative ideas and dedication to Columbia have helped hundreds of families in a challenging economic climate.

Local/Regional Figure: Dr. Cathy Hoshauer – Joined Roseville Pediatrics in 1987 and provides medical care to sexually abused child victims in Lancaster County at Lancaster General Hospital. Along with local partners, championed and opened the Lancaster County Children’s Alliance, an advocacy center, in 2006.

Millersville University Faculty/Staff: Dr. Kerrie Farkas – Associate professor of English at the University, with specializations in civic discourse and service learning. Also co-chairs the English Department’s Writing Studies Committee and is founder of the Reflect and Connect Series.

 Alumnus: Lt. Todd Umstead – Currently assigned as the administrative division lieutenant and also serves as public information officer. Has been with the Lancaster City Police Department for 21 years. Forges relations between the public, community safety services and the media.

Alumnus:  Justin Rule – Currently serves as the education director at Prospect Grove High School in Manos House. Serves as executive director of Heads Up Lancaster, which is a non-profit network dedicated to unleash potential release vision in youth through urban arts.
