After serving nine months as a wealth management intern at ParenteBeard LLC, Jennifer Hoppe, a senior business major who graduated in December, concluded her undergraduate career by receiving the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Employers (PennACE) JoAnne Day Student of the Year Award in the category of business. This award was named after a passionate educator who worked at Bloomsburg University and Lycoming College and was involved with cooperative education, academic internships and career services. Day passed away in March of 2005 after a two-year battle with cancer. PennACE presents the award each year to recognize outstanding co-ops and interns enrolled at member institutions. Three $500 awards are given to one student in a technical field, nonprofit sector and business.
Dr. Elizabeth Corrigall, associate professor of business and Hoppe’s internship faculty supervisor, nominated Hoppe for the award. “During her internship she was extremely proactive and conscientious about doing all that was required of her. She was unfailingly pleasant in every contact,” said Corrigall.
ParenteBeard is an accounting firm for small businesses, middle-market companies and nonprofit organizations. Throughout the internship, Hoppe helped to rebalance portfolios, perform due diligence on investments and travel to different branches throughout the summer months. “In one semester, she managed to become a contributing member of the company’s team and quickly pick up required knowledge,” shared Corrigall.
Along the way, Hoppe also picked up several concentrations in finance, management and international business. “Not only was I introduced to the field through this opportunity, but it made me realize that I wanted to go down a finance career path. This is the reason why I added a finance concentration,” explained Hoppe.
Hoppe received an offer to work at ParenteBeard full-time after graduation in the same sector she did when she was an intern. “I am very excited to hit the ground running in and feel extremely grateful to have this opportunity,” she shared. “I cannot wait to receive my award plaque and hang it by my desk at ParenteBeard.”
Nominees will be awarded prize money, a plaque and recognition after the January 2013 PennACE Board meeting.
