Interview with Duane Metzler and Christian DeJesus
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of interviewing Duane Metzler and Christian DeJesus about their mentoring relationship. Duane is a campus minister here on Millersville’s campus and a Pastor at the University Christian Fellowship, who dedicates his life’s work to the development of young adults both spiritually and in life. Christian on the other hand is a Philadelphia native who is in his Junior year and majoring in accounting. He is also President of the African Student Association (ASA) and a peer educator. His ultimate goal is to own his own Certified Public Accountant (CPA) firm.
HOW EFFECTIVE HAS MMAP BEEN FOR YOU AND YOUR MENTOR/MENTEE?
Duane and Christian both agreed that they believe MMAP is effective. They went on to say that the program has provided them with good experiences and allowed them to meet one another.
“Having a mentor helps guide me and put me on the right path, as well as helps me with lessons in life.” –Christian.
WHAT ACTIVITIES DID YOU GET TO DO TOGETHER?
Duane and Christian have participated in the ropes course. They also meet once a week for an hour. Christian noted that although they have very busy schedules, the emails they receive from MMAP give them something to talk about.
WHAT COMMON INTERESTS DO YOU AND YOUR MENTOR/MENTEE SHARE?
“Faith, relationships, sports, family and car issues.” –Duane.
HOW DO YOU FEEL THAT HAVING A MENTOR/MENTEE HAS BENEFITED YOU?
Duane answered that it benefits him by allowing him to see into the “window of life” of a student and it helps him to understand the tasks and responsibilities of a student. He went on to say that he has developed a deep appreciation for the commitment of Christian and that his maturity impresses him. Christian commented that although they have different backgrounds, they share common interests and through their mentoring relationship he has been able to learn from Duane.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM HAVING A MENTOR/MENTEE?
“The complexity of a college student’s world and how challenging and difficult it can be.” Duane
“How to be a man, have faith and make wise decisions.” -Christian
HOW OR WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO BECOME INVOLVED IN MENTORING?
They both agreed that it is a great way to meet people you wouldn’t meet otherwise. They went on to say that mentoring gives you the opportunities to have honest conversations and that the relationships built through mentoring are mutually beneficial.
HOW DO YOU THINK WE COULD IMPROVE IN FUTURE YEARS TO COME?
Duane and Christian agreed that MMAP does a great job. They like that we provide training and great resources to help enhance their experiences.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?
“There are really good tools on the website.” –Duane
“Go out and get a mentor!” -Christian
