Can your current Facebook “friends” give you up-to-date information on health, wellness and nutrition (and no, surfing Wikipedia or WebMD does not count). If you want accurate health information at your fingertips, become “friends” with Nurse Gabby on Facebook.
Nurse Gabby, a service of Millersville University’s Health Services Office, made her Facebook debut in 2008. “The American College Health Association surveys students every year and found that students feel that nurses and health professionals are reliable with the health information they provide, but students go to the Internet first for their health information,” said Jenny Monn, nurse practitioner at Millersville. “This is our way of combining the two.”
Students who “friend” Nurse Gabby on Facebook receive informative postings on a wide range of health topics. Students may also ask Nurse Gabby questions and discuss health issues that are important to them.
“The site is monitored by health services’ staff to assure the accuracy of the information,” said Monn. “We have also updated our website with health information topics for students to download and use.”
